DIRECTIONS IN SOUND, NOW IN ITS FIFTH YEAR
22nd SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL ASIAN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL, MARCH 4-11, 2004 IN SAN FRANCISCO AND BERKELEY, AND MARCH 19-21, 2004 IN SAN JOSE
With more than twenty musical acts sharing the bill, "Directions In Sound," the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF)'s live performance and music video component celebrates its fifth year. "Directions In Sound" takes the stage March 5 at Café du Nord, 2170 Market Street in San Francisco; March 6 at Milk, 1840 Haight Street in San Francisco; and March 20 at The Agenda Cellar, 399 South First Street in San Jose. The Festival unspools March 4-11 at the AMC Kabuki 8 Theatres and the Castro Theatre in San Francisco and at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley and March 19-21 at the Camera 3 Cinemas in San Jose. Exploring the links between moving images and music through live performance and video projection, "Directions In Sound" is a revolutionary celebration of the Asian American music underground. This year offers a stellar line-up of the latest and greatest from the worlds of hip hop, rock and punk.
Live rock performances are expected from Bay Area and Los Angeles bands, Clarendon Hills, Julie Plug, Dengue Fever, Dealership; and from the Japanese group Polysics. Hip hop and spoken word performances include Skrunchface, MikeNice, Awwwdamn, O-Dub, Dandiggity & Elaine Chao, Apollo, Tone Def and Fuse One.
Featured at the March 6 Milk performance and in the "Music Video Asia" shorts program in the Festival, is a fabulous line-up of new Asian American music videos, including videos for Clarendon Hills' "IN MY HEAD (THE PHONE IS DEAD)," directed Eugenia Chan and David Zubkis; Dan The Automator's "BEAR WITNESS III," directed by Syd Garan and Eric Henry; Kid Koala's "BASIN STREET BLUES," directed by Monkmus; and Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "PIN," directed by Tunde Adebimpe.
