South Asian Electronica and the Hip-Hop Underground

Saturday, March 8, 2003, 8:30 PM

Over the past decade, the South Asian Underground movement has become one of the most innovative and exciting new music scenes to watch, with its dynamic blend of electronic beats and Indian sounds, from classical instrumentation to bhangra. In the same time period, Asian American hip-hop artists have also become some of the most well respected creatives in their realms, setting the trend for all others to follow.

Tonight's event celebrates these two ground-breaking movements, with:
Mutiny meets Dhamaal: A rare meeting between New York's legendary Mutiny Crew (featuring DJ Siraiki and DJ Rekha) and San Francisco's own Dhamaal (featuring Maneesh The Twister, Janaka, Mercury Bonez, Ferhan, Dhruva, Adheesh, Shabi, el Diablo, Insomnia Pictures, JeanSe).
Hip-Hop Don't Stop:
The uncontested masters of hip-hop beats: derrick D (Triple Threat DJ Media), mike nice (Wordlife Promotions), ren (Tru Skool), aww damn, snake eyes and doc fu (Future Primitive).

Panel 1: Bollywood and America - New Directions, New Markets

Sunday, March 9, 2003, 12:00 noon

In the U.S., the pleasures of Bollywood cinema have long been targeted‹and limited‹to the NRI (Non-Resident Indian) community. However, recent Bollywood productions have become increasingly tailored for a more global market, while filmmakers from the diaspora have found ways of incorporating some characteristics of Bollywood into their own hybrid films. Some of the key figures involved in bringing these films to American audiences will discuss the new directions in the industry and the exciting opportunities to introduce it into a whole new market.

Panel 2: The Intimate Art of DV Filmmaking

Sunday, March 9, 2003, 3:00 PM

This year¹s program includes four feature-length narratives shot on DV and transferred to 35mm print, evidence of the oft-discussed DV revolution coming to fruition. These films have been critically acclaimed for their superb mastery of the format, while one even screened in competition at Cannes. But DV is not for every film. (Not coincidentally, these films are generally intimate, character-driven narratives.) Three filmmakers who have thought hard about the medium will talk about their decision to shoot in DV, how it affects their aesthetic and directing style, and the challenges of translating their vision from digital to print.
