This fascinating documentary is ostensibly about one man—Hoh-Kun Yuen, an immigrant from Hong Kong who came to the U.S. in 1949 to study physics—but it is also about the secret history of American postwar politics and media. From the early 1960s on, Yuen generated a massive, eccentric collection of audio recordings of political-protest demonstrations, largely based in the Bay Area. THE FROG IN THE WELL delves into this world of lost sound, the legacy of one Chinese man's confrontation with history, politics and consumer electronics.
