Divider Being Chinese under 1950s McCarthyism meant being guilty until proven American. THE CHINATOWN FILES documents the history of US-China relations from WWII through the Cold War as it affected the everyday lives of seven Chinatown citizens. Harassed and refused citizenship for participating in Democratic and Christian youth leagues. Arrested and driven to suicide for sending money home to the mainland. Sued for millions of dollars for printing China’s daily news. For years, thousands of Chinese Americans suspected of being Communists were singled out by the FBI and the INS and denied their cultural and familial ties to China, the root of their Chinese American identity. The Trading with the Enemy Act, the Chinese Confession Program: this is the history before the Wen Ho Lee case, told through interviews with those who made it through the post-Revolution diaspora.
