In this intensely personal documentary, director Kim-Chi Tyler finds herself haunted by her past after the deaths of her Vietnamese mother and American stepfather. Steeped in grief, she looks for answers in a homeland she barely remembers and a biological father she never knew. Titled after the mother who died when Tyler was thirteen, CHAC marks the director's obsession to unlock the course of events that had such a deep impact on her life: "I was determined to get an explanation from my biological father. Why did his marriage to my mother fail, and why did she flee her village and into the arms of my American stepfather?" Much to her surprise, Tyler learns that the road to discovery is multi-layered, and leads in many directions.
