US PREMIERE

"Denounced as a fool by his dying grandfather, Matsue Tetsuaki never gave much thought to his Korean ancestry. Crazy about movies since childhood, he thought of himself as an all-Japanese movie freak. But his grandfather's words rankled. By the time he entered film school, he was starting to "come out" as Korean to friends. Narrated by his younger sister Masako, ANNYONG KIMCHI is a charmingly geeky essay on Korean Japanese identity. It chronicles the history of the family (originally "Yu," not "Matsue"), outlines the political and social issues and documents Tetsuaki’s first ever visit to Korea. This is the self-portrait of a young man who isn’t sure about his identity—but is absolutely sure that he hates kimchi."
