TAGUMPAYUSA,
1999, 27 mins, video, color, English This film is part of the Community Unity series. These interactive events are open to the public and include special screenings as well as open discussions with the artists. Ralph Briones' directorial debut highlights the growing community of Pilipino American artists in the San Francisco/Bay Area. Tagalog (Pilipino) for "triumph", TAGUMPAY delivers truly triumphant and dynamic artists who are creating a new uniquely Pilipino voice. The film features flourishing performers in a variety of fields, including: comedians Kevin Camia, Allan Manalo and Rex Navarette; dance group 69 Degrees; singing group Epic Voices; and "turntablists" Invisibl Skratch Piklz. Through interviews and performance footage, they reveal their dreams and struggles for success. The Pilipino American community is one that has historically been underrepresented in the Asian American community. The artists in TAGUMPAY speak genuinely about their need and desire to establish their worth as artists and as Pilipino Americans. This film scratches the surface of this thriving community and will hopefully open the door to the many stories that remain to be told. Additional Screenings of TAGUMPAY Friday, March 10 & March 15 (6:30pm - 8:30pm) at the Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) located at 2727 Mariposa Avenue at Bryant Street in San Francisco. For pre-sale tickets you must contact Tagumpay_News@yahoo.com. Tickets are not available at the Film Festival box office. Tickets are $5.00 for students and $7.00 for general public.
