NANG NAKThailand, 1999, 100 mins, 35mm, color, Thai w/e.s. Set in the rural countryside of 19th century Thailand, NANG NAK focuses on the tragedies of Nak (Jaroenpura), a young wife and expectant mother who faces the untimely departure of her husband, Mak (Kraibutr). Sent off to fight in a bloody civil war, Mak falls close to death from injuries just as Nak-and her infant son -both pass away during childbirth. However, Nak's love for her husband is so strong that she denies her own death, and Mak returns home to wife and child without realizing that both are ghosts. Only through a series of mysterious deaths and the interventions of fearful neighbors does Mak come to understand the illusion both he and Nak have been living. Meanwhile, Nak is forced to bring supernatural powers to preserve her family against torch-bearing villagers, Buddhist monks and a violent ghost banisher. Trumping TITANIC as the most successful film in Thai history, NANG NAK joins films like Korea's WHISPERING CORRIDORS and the US' THE SIXTH SENSE as a ghost story that taps into a national mythology. Mixing elements of action, drama and mysticism, Nonzee Nimibutr probes the depths of grief and love in presenting this story of devotion that lives beyond the grave. -Oliver Wang Presented with Southeast
