Manuel Ocampo is a slippery painter stewed in controversy and glitzy fame. Although his work addresses colonialism, racism, and the Filipino self, Ocampo refuses to be pinned down by the language of multiculturalism and identity politics. Ocampos unrelenting work uses controversial symbols that shift in meaning but can still shock and offend. Along with Ocampo himself, critics, enigmatic collectors, and other artists offer their readings of his unsettling work. Abandoning a concise explanation of Manuel Ocampo and his paintings, this film cleverly tosses up the competing discourses that position people of color in the contemporary art world.
